Spatula
How can the details of a design completely change how it looks?
2015
Having been given the design for a basic cooking spatula, the project from then on was fairly simple; refine and improve the design by changing the details of the features: slots, outlines, embellishments or proportions.
In essence the original spatula and the one I designed were exactly the same product, however looking at them it is easily argued that they are completely different. By simply changing some of the design details it completely changed the look and feel of the spatula.
The changes were made iteratively through several models, initially laser cut from cardboard to obtain the right shape and feeling of the spatula. This progressed to acrylic with handles made from foam in order to develop one that fitted comfortably in the hand. The final model was made from acrylic sprayed to represent stainless steel that the finished product would be made from with a handle made from tropical hardwood.
